The Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Chartwell Regency Retirement Residence, 29 Mississauga Rd N.Please note that during the Covid pandemic meetings are held via Zoom. Typically, meetings start at 10:00 am, and run until about 11:00. At each meeting a member (the presenter) presents a book previously selected for discussion by the members. After a 5 minute presentation by the presenter, each attendee in turn comments for two or three minutes on the book and gives it a rating out of 10. The presenter then leads a general discussion about the book, often followed by recommendations for books to be added to our recommended list.
The Craft Beer Appreciation Group has been formed as a forum for exploring the increasingly popular world of craft beer. This group is geared towards entertainment and camaraderie with the faint hope that we just might increase our knowledge and develop some sensual appreciation along the way. You don’t have to be a beer expert…..it is important to note that you don’t have to know anything about beer or to even to like it to enjoy this experience. This group is about fun and developing new tastes and pleasures. Please join us!
We meet from time to time as opportunities for novel gatherings are developed. Where possible, we try to ensure that all who want to come can be accommodated. The best way to ensure your place at outings which interest you, is to be included on our roster. To be included, or to get more information, please use the link on our web page to contact the Convenor David Litner.
The cycling group typically rides on the third Friday each month, starting at 10:00 am. We average five or six biking trips during the spring/summer/fall seasons.
We endeavour to do trips in the range of 20 to 25 km. and to stay on biking/walking/running trails to the extent possible. We try our best to avoid busy highways. We also try to find an interesting restaurant along the way or nearby for lunch as part of our outing. Hybrid or mountain bike tires are preferable. All riders must wear helmets. Rides go rain or shine - only snow will halt our ride.
Our cycling group invites spouses and partners, as well as a few friends. Riders at all skill levels are welcome to join us for any outing. To ensure you receive invitations with full details of every ride's starting location and time, please contact the Cycling Convenor using the link button on this page. You will be added to the group’s invitation roster.
Members play once per week , normally on a Tuesday, with Tee-Off times generally scheduled for a 9:30am start. The average number of players range from 4-6 foursomes. Players are rotated each week to different foursomes. Some members golf on a bi-weekly basis only, or only on a part time basis.
The mission statement for PROBUS Golf is as follows:
“If you can bend over and pick up a ball you are qualified for acceptance into the group. Hitting is secondary.”
Men's Duplicate Bridge is held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Fairways condominium on Dixie Road. We do our best to follow the ACBL Yellow Card bidding system. Start time is promptly at 1:30 so please be there a little early.
The Mixed Bridge club is an activity for all levels of bridge players.
We use a bridge method called “Chicago", whereby the partnership is either vulnerable or not vulnerable on a particular deal. The score is recorded for each hand, and the totals are sent to the Convener.
The format is simple. A schedule is sent to you in January for the whole year. There are 9 sessions, one in each month except for November and December, with one session for July/August. Each month, according to the game schedule, one couple hosts one other couple at their house. This is usually arranged by a phone call or email. Typically the hosts provide only light refreshments such as tea, coffee and/or wine, and perhaps a light dessert.
Because many of us travel throughout the year, it is not strictly necessary to play your assigned games in the exact month indicated. It is important however to complete and report all of the games assigned within a reasonable time.
At the end of the year, the group normally holds a celebratory luncheon to get everyone together socially, to celebrate our playing successes, to award prizes for high scores, and to contemplate and set up for the coming new season.
If all of this sounds confusing, have no worries. Newcomers to Mixed Bridge can rely on current members to keep everything on track. Our goals are fun and fellowship!!
The Movies Group meets to attend matinee shows on weekday afternoons. The convenor, Ron Linklater, selects a promising movie and sends out an email, a few days in advance, to all who have expressed an interest. Attendance is not compulsory and light refreshments may follow, if anyone is interested.
While Covid remains a concern, the Movies group has temporarily suspended its outings. We hope to reactivate as soon as conditions warrant. Our return to movie going initially may be on an intermittent basis. To be advised of every planned outing you must be on our invitation email roster. Please contact the Convenor Ron Linklater using the link provided to be added to this list.
Low Stakes Poker presently has eight players and we are always looking for more members who are interested.
The players meet on the first Monday of each month in the home of one of the players. The games run from 1 pm to 4 pm. Each player hosts once a year.
The card players are a friendly group who always enjoy a laugh along with the betting.
If you are interested, please contact Stewart Graydon at 416 255 5169 or by email stegraydon@hotmail.com.
The Pub Lunch activity provides all Applewood Probus members with an opportunity to to meet and socialize with others, while enjoying a nice lunch and beverage of their choice from the restaurant’s menu. There is no meeting structure. Everyone who comes is made welcome, whether they become a “regular”, or only drop in to join us from time to time.
If you are interested, I invite you to register on our Pub Lunch roster by hitting the “click here to contact Bob” button provided on this webpage. By doing so, you will be added to our email invitation list, which serves primarily to remind you each month of the upcoming lunch date.
Pub lunch is on the third Monday of the month. With effect from November 21, 2022, the group’s regular restaurant changed.
The location is now Chuck’s Roadhouse, which is located in West Dale Mall at 1151 Dundas Street West, Mississauga. That’s on the northwest corner at the intersection of Dundas Street West and Erindale Station Road in Mississauga. The entrance is from the parking lot.
See you there!
The aim of the Applewood Probus Theatre group -- The Protagonists -- is to give members and their guests an opportunity to sample the wide range of theatrical performances available locally. Anyone interested who is not already on the mailing list may contact Angelo Baratta.
While Covid remains a concern, the Theatre group has temporarily suspended its outings. We hope to reactivate as soon as conditions warrant.
The Applewood Probus Walking Group has been active since May 2009, and in that time more than 100 people have participated in our walks. In 2020 we surpassed the 250 mark in number of walks.
Each walk can offer you outdoor exercise, an introduction to other members, and a chance to discover various trails in the Mississauga area. We choose groomed trails with wide paths to facilitate conversation. Members and spouses are welcome to join each walk. Everyone is free to walk at their own comfortable pace and distance. It’s a great way to spend time together.
We meet at 10 am on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month of the year. We walk on local trails and sometimes further afield. A typical walk would be up to 7 km and about 2 hours, with 10-20 participants. Weather permitting, we have a picnic lunch together, and otherwise find a suitable restaurant.
You can reach me at (905) 822-7752 if you have any questions. Photos and notes from previous walks are available on the Applewood Probus website.
This is one of the best attended regular social activities in our club with almost half of our members and their spouses or partners participating. We currently have 11 groups meeting monthly at nearby restaurants. This is a great activity to meet and socialize with other members of Applewood PROBUS as well as to experience new places to eat. In turn, group members host the others at a restaurant they have previously visited. Afterwards, the host sends a note to the Applecore to comment on the experience and advise if he would or would not recommend the restaurant to others. We publish a list of those recommendations annually. It should be noted that joining a group does not require attendance at every monthly outing. Anyone wishing to join a group meeting on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening should contact Wallas Khella.
PROBUS Wine Tasting is the opportunity for fellow Probians to get together and sample 4 to 6 bottles of wine in the comfort of a Probian home. There are currently 5 Wine Tasting Groups typically consisting of 8 (more or less) members who meet once a month at least 8 times a year (excluding July and August). Each member hosts one of the monthly wine tasting sessions with the other members contributing $20 or $25 each to the hosting member to cover the cost of wine (typically ranging between $10 to $20 per bottle), cheese and crackers, etc.
There are currently 5 wine tasting groups which meet monthly - one meets on a Tuesday; two meet on Wednesdays and two meet on Thursdays.
Drop-in for Coffee and Discussion
Our club’s Senior Common Room (the SCR) is a monthly Zoom drop-in coffee hour and discussion group for club members and guests.
For now, while the pandemic lasts, we meet on the second Friday of each month, with doors opening at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start.
We send invitation-links the day before each get-together to persons who have signed up for the SCR.
We invite club members who have not yet signed up for the SCR to do so by sending an email to HYPERLINK "about:blank"paulmansellmoore@gmail.com saying: “Sign me up.”
While initially the charter for the group was sharing ideas and experiences for those interested in self-management of their investments, the agenda has evolved to include the broader subject of “Wealth Management”; to that end our Agendas always include conversations around elements of financial planning such as Tax, Estate, and Risk.
We always open with a general conversation about the state of the world and how that may impact economics and investments, but follow that with sharing ideas of how each of us manage our affairs.
Importantly, this is an open forum and not a platform for any of its members.
We meet once a month to exchange views and opinions on Markets, the Economy and Investment ideas and strategies.
While I am a retired Portfolio Manager / Financial Advisor, I do not retain any commercial connections and act solely as moderator.
We used to meet in person but since Covid have met virtually - meetings are the third Wednesday of every month at 10:00 am. We took a summer hiatus in 2021.
We may consider staying virtual as the subject lends itself and there are many other channels for social interaction at Probus.
The Probus Men’s Supper Club group meets every month to enjoy a quality meal while socializing with other members. Each person will select from the menu as they please and pay their own bill. The Convenor (Sam Barnes) will simply make a reservation to accommodate all those who will be coming each month and be sure that everyone attending is introduced to all the others.
Men’s Supper Club outings will be on the second Thursday of each month. They will be held at different restaurants chosen by the members, and at starting times announced by the Convenor (in his monthly broadcast invitation).
Most outings will be suppers. During the winter, if the majority so prefers, some gatherings may be held as lunches.
Everyone is encouraged to give Men’s Supper Club a try. To receive an invitation each month, you must be on the Convenor’s roster. There is no obligation to attend every month, but we are looking forward to a regular group having fun, discovering new “favourite restaurants”, making new friends, and enjoying excellent conversations.
To be added to the group’s invitation roster, please contact the Convenor Sam Barnes. Just use the link provided on the Men’s Supper Club web page. Sam will add your contact information to his monthly invitation list.
Please register now and get an invitation to our next outing!
